New Zealand’s Famous Abel Tasman Coast Track

Abel Tasman Coast Track is one of New Zealand’s 9 designated ‘Great Walks’, those tracks passing through areas of exceptional natural beauty and/or unique eco-systems.

Located along the top of South Island in Abel Tasman National Park, the track mostly hugs the coast, offering many gorgeous vistas over bays, beaches and the Tasman Sea. It passes through native New Zealand forests, marshes, river estuaries and low mountains. It crosses dozens of rivers and streams as well as several long, sweeping beaches.

I first learned about Abel Tasman Track while researching New Zealand in my mid-20s, when I planned an extensive cycling/hiking/camping trip around New Zealand’s two islands. I’ve been eager to hike the track ever since.

I finally made it to New Zealand in 2014 for six months of exploration. Soon after reaching South Island in November, I finally headed out on the gorgeous hike I’d waited so long to experience. Even with all the anticipation and hype, I was not disappointed.

For 4 ½ days I walked through gorgeous, diverse scenery under mostly sunny warm skies. I even spent one day suntanning on beautiful Onetahuti Beach, something I never expected to do in chilly New Zealand!
