Kadavu Island is Fiji’s 4th largest island. Even though it’s located just 5 hours’ ferry trip from Fiji’s capital city, Suva, Kadavu is generally considered a ‘remote’ island due to the fact that it’s very lightly populated and little developed.

Indeed, the local lifestyle there in tiny villages is certainly like a very remote island. Most people live entirely off the land from vegetable gardens, coconut and fruit trees, fishing and livestock. Few have actual jobs or earn money.

Since only a few tiny, scattered villages and a handful of resorts are situated at Kadavu, most of the island is pure nature: thick jungle-y forests, vibrant grassy hills, rocky shorelines, mangroves, slim beaches and the vast Pacific Ocean. The environment is exceedingly clean and unspoilt, the sea clear as glass with visibility of 30-40 M most of the time.

A long, boomerang-shaped island, Kadavu’s eastern and southern sides are protected from the full onslaught of the Pacific by a massive barrier reef, The Great Astrolabe Reef, which is famed for its diverse, beautiful diving opportunities.

A collection of much smaller islands are splattered around the main island and further out to sea. The best known is tiny Galoa Island, resting in the crook of Kadavu’s boomerang form, a stone’s throw from the ‘mainland’. I was lucky enough to spend two weeks at Galoa at the home of an Australian-Fijian couple, helping them with the building of their new, massive dream house.

In my free time I kayaked, snorkeled, suntanned on beaches, took photos and attended to my usual blogging activities. Quite sadly, I only got to do one dive while there. The water was crystal clear, but the corals and reef fish much the same as I’m accustomed to in SE Asian waters.

After two weeks I returned to Suva by all-day ferry, which offered a great ‘tour’ of long Kadavu Island, complete with spectacular views.

Please enjoy these 20 photos of Kadavu from my 2-week visit.
