PHOTO GALLERY: Sri Lanka’s Stormy South Coast
Sri Lanka is a small tear-shaped island located just off the southeast coast of India. Formerly known as Ceylon, the country is famous for top quality teas (think Lipton’s and Ceylon teas), rich wildlife preserves, stunning ancient ruins and lovely beaches.
Lying in the southern hemisphere just below the equator, Sri Lanka is a tropical country with hot, steamy weather that is distinguished by a half-year dry season and a half-year wet season.
Luckily for Europeans, the country’s sunny dry season coincides with Europe’s coldest winter months. As a result, thousands of Europeans flock to Sri Lanka’s gorgeous beaches, cooler hill stations filled with tea plantations, and intriguing historic ruins from December through March.
However, during monsoon season from May through October, Sri Lanka’s south and west coasts are pounded by rough weather. Skies become bruised, seas furious and winds ferocious. The air is charged with dark energy. An emptiness resulting from the distinct lack of tourists creates an abandoned feeling. It is a dramatic, moody, beautiful time to visit.
I captured several dramatic coastal shots while traveling through southern Sri Lanka in May, 2010. Please enjoy these images. cheers, Lash
