Java is one of Indonesia’s largest and most important islands. Home of the capital city, Jakarta; tropical island full of stunning and varied topographies; historically rich land of ancient Hindus, Buddhists, Moslems and European colonizers. Most noteworthy for visitors are Java’s ancient temples, spectacular volcanoes, and intriquing daily culture.
I just completed a two-week tour of East Java. Highlights of my trip were visits to two volcanoes: famous Mt. Bromo and nearby sulfuric Mt. Ijen. I also saw most of East Java’s stunning and varied topography by public bus, met some interesting locals, and ate a lot of delicious food.
A decade ago I made a much more extensive tour of western and central Java. For two months I cycled, hiked volcanoes and explored Java’s famous temples and cultural arts.
These photos include shots from both of my trips around amazing Java island.
