A trusty compass and map with sack

Navigation is one of the most extremely important things for all hikers, even if you are staying on marked trails. It would be best if you kept a compass and map of the local area with you at all times so that you can find your way and prevent yourself from getting lost. Map sacks (waterproof cases) are a great addition, as they can keep your map safe from the rain and humidity. For a cheaper alternative, you can even laminate a copy, or place it in a tight zip-lock bag.

A good quality backpack

If you’re thinking of hiking for more than a few hours, a good quality backpack is a must. Not only do you want to be able to fit all of your belongings in, but you don’t want any unnecessary strain on your back as it can lead to injuries. Try searching around your nearby quality camping shops for the best products, as they are generally made with extra support. You can even make them more comfortable with tie down strap accessories, like shoulder pads and strap handles.

It just depends on what you are more comfortable with.

Some use a pump mechanism, other’s ultraviolet light, so it’s best to do your research before making a purchase. To make things easier, you can get them included as part of your drink bottle, or even your backpack so you don’t have another item taking up too much space.

An emergency bivy

If you plan on staying overnight on your trip, you will already have shelter with you; however, it can be wise to keep something with you on every trip, just in case of an emergency. An emergency bivy can be used to keep you warm and safe if you do happen to get stuck in the woods overnight. They are waterproof, windproof, and can also be used as an emergency blanket to assist with shock. They are definitely worth the investment, and you never know when they could come in handy.

And that’s it! With these items, you’ll be a hiking pro and be able to explore the outdoors more efficiently. Just remember always to be safe, as it can be quite easy to get lost in an unknown location. Take your phone with you, bring a map, and always tell someone the direction in which you are heading.
