PHOTO GALLERY: Japanese Temples, Shrines and Castles

I’m a huge fan of Asian temples in general, and Japanese temples in particular.  So much beautiful and unusual architecture; so many intricately carved wall panels, beams, furniture and roof fixtures; so many vibrant colors.

Japanese Temples, Shrines and Castles are visually stunning and incredibly varied. Often set in natural surroundings like forests, mountains, and landscaped gardens, they are built to integrate with the natural world.

Japanese TempleKyoto city, Japan’s former capital and ongoing center of traditional arts and culture, boasts over 3000 temples, shrines and castles. They range from Imperial Palace temples & gardens to unique, internationally famous temples to sprawling monasteries to humble, little-known neighborhood shrines. Many present important annual festivals, monthly flea markets and traditional tea ceremonies.

Thousands of other magnificent temples, shrines and castles are scattered throughout Japan. They’re situated in huge cities, small towns, tiny villages and even out amidst rice fields and remote mountains.

While living in Kyoto for 6 years, I traveled extensively around the country, often visiting new temples & shrines, both famous and un-acclaimed. I never bored of visiting and exploring them.

This photo gallery is a collection of images from around Japan during my travels of the country. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did visiting them!  cheers, Lash
