Pashupatinath Temple – Kathmandu

Pashupathinath Temple is the most important Hindu temple in the entire nation of Nepal. Located along the scenic banks of the holy Bagmati River on the eastern outskirts of Kathmandu, it is also a major site for Hindu cremation ceremonies, which take place almost daily. Both royalty and commoners are cremated there.

Pashupatinath is also one of the most important Shiva Hindu temples in the Indian subcontinent. As a result, Indians as well as Nepalis flock to the temple. It is often referred to as the Varnasi of Nepal, though it’s certainly much more low-key.

Pashupathinath is also a stunning temple complex, consisting of a group of temples, shrines, statues and other religious figures. Many different architectural styles are represented. It’s also set in a very scenic natural location.

Outside the temple complex, along the streets leading up to the entrance, a mass of small shops sell flowers, prayer beads, incense and other religious offerings for visiting devotees. Local tea shops and restaurants sell refreshments. Sadhus – wandering holy men – often hang out around Pashupatinath.

Because of the stunning natural setting, interesting collection of temples, riverside cremations, masses of visiting devotees and all the activity going on throughout the day, Pashupatinath is one of Kathmandu’s most intriguing places to visit. If you’re heading to Kathmandu, be sure to visit this temple on the outskirts of the city.
